Noun [Proto-Celtic]

Etymology: Possibly loaned from a substrate language of northwestern Europe, hinted by the geminate and a-vocalism. This substrate could also have been the source of Proto-Germanic *lattō (“plank, board”), but with loss of initial *s-. Perhaps related to the root of *sladyeti (“to slay, hit”) (compare Proto-Germanic *slahaną); similar sense development can be found in Serbo-Croatian šibati (“to flog, whip”) > šiba (“rod, switch”).
